Most display stands are covered in velvet. Ours aren't, and the reason is practical rather than aesthetic.

Velvet is a woven pile: long fibers, lying in one direction. That's what makes it beautiful, and it's also why it throws a bright streak across your product photographs that shifts every time you move the camera. Worse, long pile works its way into prong settings and between chain links — lift a piece off quickly and a thread comes with it. On vermeil and high-polish silver, months of that contact leaves fine surface dulling.

Vegan suede has a short, dense nap with no direction. It scatters light instead of returning it, so the background stays even at any camera angle under any lighting. There's nothing long enough to snag on — a chain lifts away clean. And it has just enough grip to hold a piece where you place it, instead of letting everything slide to the center of the bar.

Black is flocked rather than woven. The fibers stand upright, producing a true matte black rather than the very dark gray that dark suede photographs as. For silver, white gold and platinum — metals that rely on the background disappearing entirely — this is the one to choose.
